The construction sector is very competitive indeed. More prominent firms handle the bigger development jobs while smaller and newer ones must display their quality with numerous subcontracts before moving on to major ones.
My design firm has just been awarded an assignment to create a new logo samples for a local construction organization. To begin the project, the art director and I visited our client’s office for a brief interview session to garner more information about the company.
Like many other companies we have surveyed, most companies are aware they need a new outlook to remain competitive but are not really sure what they want. That is where we come in.
Before embarking on the logo design, we ordinarily inquire about the history of the firm, its turnover, its goals, its specialty, its target market and exactly why it wants a new logo samples; just to get a better perception of things.
We ascertained that they are a relatively young organization, 9 years in the business with 4 major subcontract projects and many minor ones under their belts, each one more impressive than the last. They are now seeking to adopt a blue ocean strategy and venture into eco-friendly medium cost suburban development – a niche with few competitors – and therefore taking the opportunity to build a reputation for themselves as one of the earliest firms to address this niche.
From the dialogue, we found out that they have the required resources to engage medium scale development projects. Their chosen niche also makes it easier to distinguish them from other developers.
At our studio, we had our normal brainstorming session and and decided on the concept we would finally adopt. From there we assigned 4 designers to produce individual interpretations or construction company logo design to turn those ideas to logo designs.
After a number of days, the logo concepts were ready for perusal. Some designs utilized stylized text while others used construction related graphics like mixers and trowels to get the point across. Although all 4 logo samples samples were unique in their own way, they all stuck to two major points.
Professionalism
Developers deal with costly projects. In order to be awarded such projects, they must always be seen as a professional and responsible organization with ideal business ethics. Thus, the neat and clear designs reflected that well.
Eco-Friendliness
This is the niche this firm is determined to penetrate. Not surprisingly, the designs, either by color or graphics, further impresses the company’s dedication to the preservation of the environment.
Now it is up to our clients to decide on which of the four designs they prefer. Alternatively they can make changes here and there but as professional designers, we must ensure the design eventually keeps to the key points mentioned earlier.
