Corporate Change: How To Utilize Staffing Firms And Saving Money In The Long Run

Filed under: Management — tkwriter @ 8:48 pm

An option that many organizations are turning to in order to meet staffing needs for corporate change is to hire personnel from staffing firms. Staffing firms are able to quickly deliver a person or group of people with very specific skills to fill a need. While this can be an effective method for dealing with the staffing problem it does have disadvantages too.

One of the pitfalls to employing a staffing firm for corporate change needs is that regular employees can be resentful toward temporary staffers. It may cause insecurities on the part of the regular employees and will make them feel that they’re in danger of being replaced, especially if the temporary staffer is very good. Although if used in the right way, these temporary staffers can really drive corporate change into a clear focus.

One objection to using external staffing is that it can be expensive. But in return, they get to have a worker whose skills match the job position they’re looking for, without the extra hassles of searching for and interviewing the perfect candidate. After all, finding and hiring an equivalent permanent staffer would also be expensive.

Employers are also paying for reduced risk. The temporary staffer is taking on a higher level of risk because their performance requirements are very high. Furthermore, they can be fired or replaced easily. It is that reduced risk that the management is paying for.

Employers have a tendency to do two things that cause a huge rise in external staffing costs. One is to bring in external staffer to try to put out a fire. Situations like these are chaotic. A harder job under increased pressure requires a higher cost too. One other thing that employers do is to invest a bunch of money into hiring a staffer who is overskilled to meet a certain need. Overskilling can mean the job absolutely will be done on time, but the price goes up for the extra skills. The best way to avoid this problem is for internal management to understand the skill requirements for the job and hire appropriately. This can reduce the costs for staffing and at the same time, get the job done.
