Problems E-Mail Attachment Viruses

Filed under: Security — tkwriter @ 11:39 pm

Did someone you know just send you an electronic mail132013201320 attachment that you weren’t expecting? Perhaps it’s a picture to go along with a joke, a song they want you to hear, or a program that displays fireworks on your screen. Surely your co-worker checked the file out first? Of course your mom would not send you a file that would harm your computer, right?

Nowadays, no matter who you think sent an e-mail132013201320 attachment, you MUST be safe. Before opening a surprise attachment, why not first ask your friend, coworker, or family member in a friendly e-mail132013201320 if they really meant to send you the file?

Why am I saying this? It’s not to upset dear ma. However, thanks to viruses that spread through e-mail132013201320, not to mention other types of malware people might unknowingly install by visiting rogue or hacked websites, many peoples’ computers are becoming unwitting accomplices to the spread of rogue file attachments. There are viruses that can infect machines causing them to e-mail132013201320 innocent looking attachments that are actually viruses or spyware to everyone in their address book. Worse yet, some of this malware actually can make the e-mail132013201320 look as if it came from someone else entirely!

That’s right. For sake of argument, assume you have a friend, Bob, who uses e-mail132013201320 software that contains an address book. Let’s say that your name is in Bob’s address book, as well as the name of a mutual friend, Bill. Unfortunately, there is malware that can cause e-mail132013201320 to be sent to you, unknowingly by Bob, that is made to look like it originally came from Bill! As you can see, even if your friend, family member, or coworker is not directly infected by a virus, you may receive rogue attachments that seem to be originated by them.

You may be thinking that photos, songs and documents must be safe to open – That its only executable files that are the problem.

Wrong. Virtually any type of rogue attachment can cause problems.

First, realize that depending on your configuration, Windows does not always display file extensions, the characters at the end of a filename that determine its file type. Just because you receive what you think is a music file does not mean it is actually a song. Double-click an application pretending to be a song and instead of your media player opening up, a virus may get installed on your machine.

Second, some rogue file attachments may be written to take advantage of security exploits found in popular software you may have installed. Rogue Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other Office files may contain what are called Macro viruses, which when run could do all sorts of damage to your machine.

If an exploit exists in a popular multimedia player such as QuickTime for Windows, Winamp, or Windows Media Player and the software has not been patched on your machine, double-clicking a rogue music file could take advantage of the exploit if that happens to be your default player. The same goes with images, photos, and videos – if there’s a bug with an image viewer, for example, a hacker may have constructed a picture to take advantage of this problem. If you unluckily view the rogue attachment with the software that contains a security hole, many problems could arise.

One of the important things you could do is keep your operating system and software up-to-date. This won’t completely eliminate it however.

When it comes to e-mail132013201320 attachments, be safe. Scan EVERY e-mail132013201320 attachment no matter who you think is its originator. Know that executables are not the only types of attachments that are theoretically dangerous, so be careful with songs, images, and documents as well. Don’t open an e-mail132013201320 attachment unless you’re sure it is safe and you confirm the sender meant to e-mail132013201320 you the file. Keeping your virus scanner up-to-date may help, too.

ID Fraud – Don’t Blame The Internet

Filed under: Security — tkwriter @ 10:31 pm

Identity theft – also known as ID theft, identity fraud and ID fraud – describes a type of fraud where a criminal steals someone else’s identity in order to profit illegally. It is one of the fastest growing forms of fraud in a lof of developed countries.

In the UK identity theft is increasing at the rate of 500% each year and, according to Which Magazine, 25% of the populace have either suffered from identity theft or know someone who has.

In America, a report issued by the Better Business Bureau revealed that, in 2004, over 9 million Americans became victims of identity theft with the total sum stolen being $52.6 billion.

With numbers like this, it’s no wonder that there is a certain level of concern regarding computer and internet security. After all, the internet is basically a mechanism for exchanging data and the possibility that some of the information exchanged may be more than intended is never far from many internet user’s minds.

It’s easy to imagine evil masterminds around the globe using the internet to hack into computers in order to gain access to data with which to advance their fiendishly clever plots. However, as shown in the report, the facts of the matter are a little more basic and the internet, far from making you more prone to ID theft, can help to significantly minimise the damage if you do fall victim this form of illegal activity.

Based upon the Better Business Bureau’s report the main methods by which criminals gain access to data used for identity theft fraud are as noted below:

  • Information stolen from garbage. 2.6%
  • Email132013201320s sent by criminals posing as legitimate business. 1.7%
  • Obtained some other way. 7.4%
  • Computer spyware. 5.2%
  • Information accessed by corrupt employee. 8.7%
  • Stolen paper mail132013201320 or fraudulent change of address. 8.0%
  • Accessed by friend, acquaintance or relative. 11.4%
  • Lost or stolen wallet, chequebook or credit card. 28.8%
  • Computer viruses and/or hackers. 2.2%
  • Don\’t know, refused, no answer. 11.1%
  • Accessed as part of a transaction. 12.9%*

* 12.9% due to transactions – 10.4% offline transactions, 2.5% online transactions.

In total, when the instances where data was accessed during transactions are segmented into online and offline transactions, only 11.6% of the information used to carry out ID theft fraud was obtained from computers.

Of this more than half was obtained by hugely reduced by installing suitable protection software and making sure that this is kept updated.

Not only did the survey reveal that the internet was not a major source of illegally obtained personal revealed that those fraud victims who monitored their banking records online, ATM machines or other real time methods suffered monetary losses which were, on average, eight times lower when compared to those of victims who used conventional paper statements to review their records. This very significant reduction was attributed to the rapid discovery of the crime due to “real time” monitoring.

Of course, that’s not to say that you shouldn’t exercise great care when using the web or take care to protect the personal data which you might have stored on your PC. However, as long as you install suitable virus, firewall and spyware protection, and keep this constantly updated, the should be more of a help than a hindrance when it comes to avoiding identity scams.

Get Important Secrets About malware

Filed under: Security — tkwriter @ 4:46 am

Trojans can be malicious programs that install along with a more attractive one. For example, that great free software program you got from that dodgy website? It may well be the program you wanted. But someone (usually a 3rd party) may well have attached a Trojan to it. The Trojan will be installed as well as the software you wanted.

Trojans are not viruses, in the sense that they don’t replicate or send copies of themselves to others. They are just another software program that can be installed on your computer, albeit a nasty one!

So trojans are? A Trojan can be very malicious indeed. Most of them are intent on controlling your PC. These are called Remote Access Trojans, or RATs for short. If someone has placed a Trojan on your computer, they’ll be able to see everything that you can. Some of them can even control your web cam. That means the attacker can see you! If you have speakers attached to the PC, they can even hear you!

If that weren’t bad enough, the attacker will have access to your computer, enabling him to upload nasty things to your PC. After all, why should he store these things on his computer when he has access to yours?

Most trojans nowadays are placed on your computer by hackers or criminals. If you type your credit card details in to a website, for example, then the attacker can record what you type. If a criminal has control of a lot of computer, he could also launch something called a Denial of Service attack. A DoS attack is when a lot of malicious computers attack a particular network or website. The network has so many request that it can’t cope, so has to shut down. The criminals then blackmail132013201320 the owner (“We’ll let you have your site back if you give us money”.) Many gambling sites have been hit by this type of attack.A Trojan can also disable your security software, leaving you wide open on the internet.

How do trojans get on my computer?
If you have an unpatched version of a Windows operating system (XP, ME, W98, etc) that is allowed on the internet then you have a very high chance of becoming infected. Install Service pack 2 as matter of urgency. And get all the other Windows updates. If you browse using Internet Explorer then be aware that it is notorious for being unsecured. (At one stage, it was known as the Swiss Cheese browser because it had so many holes in it!) even with all the latest patches, someone is always trying to find a new hole in Internet Explorer. If an attacker can guide you to a particular website, then your browser’s security holes can be a way for them to load programes onto your PC. A lot of people have switched to using a browser other than Internet Explorer, the most popular choice being Firefox. But Trojans can get on to your PC many other ways: email132013201320 attachments, software/music downloads, unsafe Instant Message clients, IRC, Peer 2 peer downloads, open ports not protected by a firewall, etc.

Just because you have anti virus software does not mean you are necessarily protected from Trojans. The best thing to do is to constantly scan your computer with programs like MalewareBytes or ComboFix. You can get these software freebies by doing a google search or yahoo search.

Integrity & Private Detective Article

Filed under: Security — tkwriter @ 7:14 pm

Hiring just anyone to work in your company isn’t always a realistic thing to do these days. Hiring is a crapshoot now when you have to try and guess what the person sitting across the desk from you is going to be like working for you. If you want to know more about the people you hire, use integrity testing. Not everyone you want to hire will need in-depth security screening, but it’s always nice to know that you have that option available to you if you need it.

Of course the first step is to do a background check on candidates aspiring to work with you. While background checks are a good idea, they really don’t answer the question of whether or not the potential employee is a troublemaker or not. What you want to know is if a particular candidate is likely to steal from you or indulge in other behaviors like drugs abuse and disciplinary problems. Apart from a Private Investigators UK, the other things you need to know are whether or not the potential employee has a good foundation in being dependable, reliable and being on time and courteous, as these things make a good employee. Knowing these things in advance of hiring will also save you the cost of hiring and training a person to fill a particular job, when those costs often hover around the $1,500 mark.

There are always holes in a person’s background check that can be filled in when you have an integrity test administered. When testing for integrity, you are also testing to find out if you can count on the person to be there when you need them and if they may be trusted. Fraud Investigations These secondary traits are good to know when hiring new people.

There are various other tests that may be administered, such a personality tests along with the integrity tests to be able to get a fix on the person’s emotional stability. This is another area where employers are spending money to weed out candidates who have uncertain emotional stability and may crack under the pressures of the job. If you’re going to test potential employees, talk to an attorney and find out what things you need to be aware of first. If its too much for you to understand take a break and fly to Riads Marrakech The law states that employers must not discriminate against anyone or infringe on their privacy, so before testing anyone consult a solicitor. Employees who will be taking integrity tests or other tests have the choice of which way they want to take the tests ranging from interactively on the phone to filling out a computer survey.
