- The water in the tank of the toilet, not the bowl, is all right to drink ONLY if chemical treatments haven’t been introduced into the tank and the tank is clean. Drain any water retained in the home water pipes. Put a container underneath the faucet and expel the air pressure in the pipes by turning on the highest faucet in the house. Then run the water from the lowest tap into a container. If you are on one floor, merely empty the water in all faucets into a container.

- Turn off the power to the hot water tank and allow it to cool. This may take a number of hours. With a container under the drain spigot at the bottom of the tank, open the valve and allow the water to drain into the clean container. Some of these sources of water might may need sterilization in advance of drinking. Maintain chemical purification tablets in your emergency aid kit just in case.

Safe Water Resources Outside

There could come a time when water from the plumbing within your home is not available at all. How would you go about finding drinking water outside of your house? Here are some of the really easily accessible sources of water from outside sources:

- Water remaining in a coiled garden water hose.

- Rain water collected in a hunk of plastic or clean container.

- Melted snow that has been heated prior to drinking. Water Cautions

Take additional precautions with standing bodies of water or water from streams, rivers, or lakes. Water from any free flowing source may not be as clean as it looks either. Knowing the way and where to locate safe drinking water during an emergency may help you survive. While some of these abnormal sources may not look too appealing now, in an emergency you will be glad you know about emergency water purification systems.
