3 Keys To Work Site Safety

Filed under: General — tkwriter @ 1:52 pm

One of the very best ways a company can insulate itself from employees experiencing on the job injuries or from having to process a worker’s compensation claim is to see that all job sites have the necessary safety equipment. Not only is this an extremely prudent move, but in many cases, a required move by state safety and health administration officials. The company who provides a safe and secure job site and who provides workers with the tools to maintain that safe site will most likely be the company who has continually high safety ratings and whose employees feel confident and empowered. A company willing to create fall protection measures, such as a rail guard or an industrial fence, or even something as simple as a number of bright, orange pylons is ensuring the safety of worker’s and passersby alike. There are several key things companies can do to promote work site safety.

The first step in securing a safe and organized job site is to appoint an experienced, capable project manager. This project manager, who will spend much, if not all of his working hours on the site will be in charge of seeing that all codes are being followed and that all safety guidelines are being met. On a daily basis, he should exercise a checklist of observations and conduct tests to make sure that equipment is in place and in good working order. He functions as the final word and has predominant authority over the other field supervisors and lower level employees.

A further step a company can take to ensure the secure working environment is to make sure that personal safety products are readily available for all employees. What an employee has to wear can directly influence his ability to stay safe in certain situations. A worker should be required to wear a hard hat and safety googles, if the situation merits. Steel toed boots and industrial gloves are often a necessity at many work sites. An employee’s access to these safety products is essential. Clearly posted safety-wear signs can serve as visual reminders of the type of clothing and products that should be worn.

Last, but certainly not least, a company should require that each new hire receive and read a company handbook outlining all safety policies and procedures. Having an employee sign a statement that he understands and is willing to follow all safety rules and regulations is a step that many human resource departments see as advantageous. A thorough knowledge of safety policy can greatly assist a new employee as he is learning the tasks and procedures required of him. Additionally, an employee’s signed statement that he has acquainted himself with safety standards can assist a human resources department in the event of a potential lawsuit.

The company who follows a clear standard of safety procedures will have a well-functioning job site. Employees will be able to capably perform duties and marked slow-down due to dangerous situations or disorganization will be non-existent. The successful company will provide a safe and secure work site for the duration of the assigned project.
