Snowboard Glossary Terms
So, you want to get into snowboarding, but you don’t know the’lingo’ so you can stay abreast of all of your buddies. Well, here is a list of terms that you are going to need to know so that you too can talk snowboarding.
Backside : the side of the skateboard where your heels are. When making a reference to the backside, it implies to the back of the snowboarder, as in having to have a look over your shoulder.
groundless Bindings : Your feet will really be set the snowboard ; there are no metal base plates to set your feet on.
Blindside : fundamentally the backside. The side of the snowboarder that’s'blind’ to them. Again, having to look over your shoulder.
Bonk : This is where you hit an object with your snowboard as in bumping it and then continuing on with the course.
Boost : Catching air with a jump.
Bust : patois for’to do’ as in,’check him out, busting out this trick.’
Camber : The space, when the snowboard is lying flat on the surface, that’s located between the ground and the front and back parts of the snowboard.
Cant : the angle at which your feet are pointing. It could be either duck footed or pigeon toed. This determines how your knees will be bent.
gossip : The vibration of the snowboard when riding, sometimes caused by high speeds, tight turns or icy conditions.
Corduroy : Tracks that are left by the Snowcat. The tracks make the turns less complicated.
Dampening : Reducing the vibration to help the board with handling.
Delaminate : Where the snowboards layers begin to come apart. Sometimes happens because of a fault in the board, crash or long-term usage.
Duckfoot : When your toes are pointing outward on the board.
Effective edge : the edge of the metal edge on the board. You usually turn so that the effective edge is what you are using.
Fakie : backwards riding. Riding in the opposing direction than what you routinely would.
Fall Line : the gravity of the slope. The way the gravity pulls you down the slope.
Freeriding : Snowboarding for fun only.
Frontside : the side of the snowboard where your toes are located.
Grab : whenever you grab your snowboard with one or both hands during air or a trick. Snowboarding
Half-pipe : customarily built with snow. It is a vertical U-shaped mound, like a wave for surfboarders, which you can use to perform tricks and stunts. Snowboarding Gear
Heel Edge : the side of the snowboard where your heels sit.
Heel side turn : a turn made on the heel side of the board.
Ollie : when you lift your front foot to get air, spring off of your back foot to where the board is in the air utterly. ( borrowed term from skateboarding )
Tail : the end of the snowboard that’s nearest to your back foot.
Toe side turn : a turn that you make on the toe side edge of the snowboard.
