By the time it was in danger of being razed in the 1970′s, Church Hill’s theatre had been a movie theater, a center of downtown commerce and the site of many parties and dances. A beautiful Art Deco building with this proud heritage was something the residents of Church Hill were not willing to easily part with, and their efforts resulted in its renovation. Today, it is an example of community theatres which have too quickly disappeared from the American landscape.
Since 1988, 76 productions have been performed at the Church Hill Theatre. It is a center of creative activity in the community, being host to children’s theatre, music performances, workshops and many other activities that keep the spirit of a dynamic downtown alive in Church Hill.
The building has been restored to the beauty of its glory days with some modern improvements such as handicap accessibility and a modern lobby and snack bar. For those too young to remember the days of downtown theatres, this is a great way to experience it and to understand why so many miss it so.
